I'm testing if the layered Gimp files are still accessible. You have to sign up for it.
This would be necessary for altering existing buildings, aliens, ships, troops, etc.
For example, I'm adding many levels of tech and then preset ships unlock. Well you want say an Omega Samech design, but slightly altered so the player knows that is a newer generation. Then have many of them, called something similar or formulaic yet different.

A .bop is a renamed .png file.
A .boj is a renamed .jpg file.

For example, every building has a .bop image file associated with it. You would take an existing building, reskin it in some image editor, add a layer or recolor it, and save it as a new file. Now your new building will look similar and be thematic but has some unique feature.
(I am seriously sleep deprived due to documenting BotE, creating advanced save games, and modding. Sleep is for the weak!)

Locally rural people say, "I'll sleep when I die!" (translation, there is no rest for the wicked until you have eternal rest.)

Although not documented, there must be a similar image attribute for each ship just as there is for buildings.

The different kinds of available editors.
My plan is to at least start with the BotEfor Android (Windows XP version) running under emulation using ExaGear to document how I make changes in the Balancer 1.0 mod.

Foe example, have you ever wondered how planets are skinned in the BotE galaxy? Here is an explanations of the .bop files and the specific designated sector for each major race.

And here is planet classes and what resources can be found on that specific class.

So the Troop Editor has to keep track of specific images used for all the kinds of units in BotE.

The Minor Race Editor has to have specific image files associated with minor race.
