In the first 100 turns, it may indicate that 50+ turns are needed to do an upgrade, when the cost is very low, so that is because your population is low and busy focused on some other element like farming. Pay for cheap upgrades as you lack the population to do them. If you maintain profitability, it's faster to pay for upgrades that cost less than 300 credits, and often better than those costing under 500 credits too. You are trying to get more cost-efficient so fewer people can do far more work and make a better than expected profit.

Nontraditional terraforming may be trying to grow adequate food on an icy world and so have low yield harvests, so don't get too far in the red bn having to take from your stored food. Then there is very little margin for error.

Anyone who is into preparedness would like the game as they monthly rotate food and have gardens and manage their food cache. Any agriculture students or farmers or botanists would like this program from the puzzle of resource management.

This is a thinker's game. Anyone who works in strategic management would understand this game.

People are often impatient, but when managing 30 colonies, you can't accelerate construction on all of them. If the cost is too high to pay for it, but the upgrade takes less than 10 turns, well...let your workers do it. So what?

But if it's going to take 25+ turns to accomplish, then lengthy delays means everything you planned for backs up. That is what you are doing: picking upgrades to accelerate those projects in the fastest and least expensive manner. "Which upgrade is a bargain price versus the others? Which upgrades save you money? Which upgrades generate revenue?"

The biggests factors are tech level, adequate population, enough food to feed them, and enough industrial buildings so they are efficient.

Mining saves your butt as sometimes the sales prices is high and you have surplus, so you sell it to get 20,000+ credits and then can pay for all your slow project upgrades at once and VASTLY improve efficiency in a few turns. That makes a huge difference.

I promise you by say turn 400+, and if playing against 2-3 AI empires, then you can make mountains of credits later because you were financially disciplined earlier.

People who can't manage money should play this game to learn how to do so.

It's turn #251. I have 25 colonies, but three are actually members of minor races. I've built every system to have the best efficiency, managed farming so there are no issues with famines, and know that if everything is normal, I will probably encounter my opponent, the Khaoran in the next 50 turns. I have explored a third of the map, or will have by then.

I have made contact with most minor races in my area, by saving the game prior, and then not directly entering their homesystems, but navigating across and then avoiding their fleets, and trying to hail them. If that fails, I reload and skip them for another time.

I go to my Empires screen, and click on systems, and then at the top click "resources". Am I able to mine titanium everywhere as it's essential? Yes, all but the Orion system as it's comprised of three O class ocean worlds. I do the same for deuterium and duranium. I begin plans for crystal and iridium mining to be incorporated and upgraded.

I have to start planning on at least starbases to protect my 25 colonies, so I prioritize those on the borderlands first, but cognizant that certain systems are crucial economic powerhouses that I must not lose.

I don't have any minor race fleets yet, which is unusual, as typically by now, I have at least two. This means I have to hussle to get my military spending up. But I realized that, and have looked at what systems have deritium and which can be upgraded, so I am not solely dependent on Omega Alpha which is my homesystem.

I am making 1500-1600 credits per turn, and have been upgrading all along, so the upgrades are not so prohibitively expensive. Every ten turns, as I have gotten my economy "hot" from lots of purchases, titanium rises by 100 credits, and so since I have lots of mined materials as a surplus, I can sell, just being careful NOT to do so from my ship building systems asvessels have high requrements and they cost a lot to rush construction.

That sale of titanium will net a profit of 20,000-30,000 at this stage of the game and gives me some breathing room to do expensive upgrades or build ships. Obviously I have to build ships this time.

Doing all of that allows me to heavily invest in military spending IF I need to, which I do as I was unlucky and unable to get minor race fleets as a result of membership. It's entirely random.

When the Khaoron come visiting, I want to block them from approaching my enemies so they don't snag them as members which could seriously harm me as those minor race enemies are the closest, and likely way more lethal than the Khaoran vessels at this stage of the game.

It's a crapshoot as if the Khaoran were lucky and gathered powerful minor races as members, they can send them to investigate. Or they might have successfully invaded a warlike people whose ships are less expensive.

These are the many issues with random maps.

And this was yet another test to see what unusual tactics I could try when faced with a heavily populated galaxy which restricted standard colonization. I have been entering systems with icy worlds, ocean worlds, barren worlds, and that lack M class planets. So instead, really struggled and terraformed them and made it work with what randomly turned up in this galaxy map.

It's far easier to colonize with a very low setting of minor races, but far less interesting. In the long run, more minor races mean more unusual technology, buildings, defensive abilities to resist ground invasions, more powerful ships, much more variation in infantry/armor units, etc.

If I had to struggle, the Khaoran had to struggle too as they are not known for being diplomatic and so likely have not gotten many minor race members.

Were I facing the Terrans, I would be worried as they easily swallow up minor race fleets and then use them. It's way easier to play as the Terrans...until sabotage rounds start happening.

You can have a perfectly enjoyable game as the sole major race and just explore and engage in combat entirely on your own terms as those minor races will not attack you, at least on the easy level. You can just be cerebral and thoughtful and play in an entirely humanistic fashion and be a total pacifist if you so desire.

At some point by turn 500, by playing this way, I should be able to have such massive profit, that if the Khaorans are not too hard to deal with, then bribe, offer gifts, and sweet deals to those minor races that hate me, and bend them to my will. That is likely what the Omega Alliance would do, but I can play them as benevolently as I desire.

BotE is entirely open ended as a sandbox game, and I hope you encourage others to play it that way.

Through diplomacy, you will eventually get membership of minor races. And some have powerful fleets of ships. But when this happens, it's a double edge sword as yes, you suddeny have an armada, but suddenly you have massive UPKEEP. You have to pay for them.

In game dynamic terms, what are vessels for but as largely offensive weapons to acqure new systems. Yet technically prior to turn 300, the AI major races likely cannot afford to attack you in any meaningful way with its own ships. It may try to launch an attack with minor race fleets it absorbed through membership though. Orbital attacks lack ground forces, and the AI may foolishly launch such attacks and bombard a system, but then be unable to muster the troops to take the system.

And nothing is so moronic as wasting ships in systems that are heavily defended by starbases and orbital batteries, shields, and minefields. You would trash lovely magnificent vessels. What a waste. 'Makes my stomach hurt at the stupidity of getting soldiers killed for no reason.

The Heyoun did just that in one of my beta tests. I forget how many, maybe nine destroyers. It was completely boneheaded.

Know who you are attacking and their defensive and offensive capabilities.

The first time you launch an invasion, you have to have adequate air support to protect your vulnerable transports carrying your troops. Don't send green inexperienced troops in to do a man's job. That is insane. Whatever you think is enough, may not be if they have special defensive weapons or technology. Bring boatloads as you are demanding a few can withstand billions of colonists. Some species are hardier than others.

At first you want your soldiers to get their feet wet and not face significant opposition.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/diction ... feet%20wet

Soldiers are like everyone else and make lots of stupid errors their first few invasions. Stupid troops die from their errors. In the Vietnam War, some experienced troops saw so many green recruits die within days of arriving, that they wouldn't even talk to them, out of self-protection, as then they would care, and it would make them grieve more.

The reason drill sergeants are so seemingly mean in basic training is they know that human beings are foolish and assume they understand concepts and are lazy and do the bare minimum. And those are the troops who die due to their weaknesses. Those drill sergeants are trying to give them a chance to survive.

Soldiers die because they make stupid errors or their commanding officers do.

The minor races want a little respect, especially when they have great tech/buildings and large fleets. Bribing is often a waste of time (in fact, it may make low corruptability minor races angry). When you have an excess 10,000, send 2500-4000 as gifts to get non-cooperative neighbors to begin trade. You send them the first gift to improve their mood, then offer a second gift with trade. They won't take the 2nd gift unless accepting trade, so it's not that bad.

You don't care about measly trade regardless. You want their membership. It gets your foot in the door.

See the trade topic to get hints on how involved trade is regarding determing what the minor races need.

I highly recommend older folks or really anyone play this to stimulate their intellectual capacity. BotE is just as energizing to the brain by causing a vast increase in dendrite formation as you make intellectual connections between tiny bits of raw data. It's very similar to leaning a language.

Not only does all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,but everyone gets stale and this accelerates as you age and don't vary your routine.

A person with a Master's degree or above in education or a neuroscientist or a medical student will learn about synaptic pruning in adolescence. I believe poor parenting and lousy middle school teachers foster synaptic pruning and thus ruin young minds in formation.

It's sabotaging the future potential of young minds and dulling creativity.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6oKsikHollM

The very worst thing you can do is not stimulate the creativity in children as dendrite formation falls off spectacularly, and that is the impetus to one idea leading to others in a cascade. BotE is excellent at this. It's why BotE would be a fine educational game.

Most people get stuck in a rut both physically and because of a lack of challenging paradigms.
https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/rut

Your professors were supposed to make you challenge ideas by fostering critical thinking. In graduate school, you couldn't say you understood a topic unless you challenged all the assertions, came up with counter ideas, and then could teach the topic to the uninitiated.

The foolish become iconoclasts. They just oppose just be irascible...and have not an iota of common sense.

BotE could be just rotely doing meaningless tasks or it could nurture creative solutions to multifactorial problems...when the simplistic solution is war. And war is never successful long term...not since ancient Roman invasions.

BotE at its heart, whether intentional or not, is about cost benefit analysis.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3LeV98kPKFk
If I do this, does it genuinely help or hinder me?
To what degree?
What choices can I make positively to achieve the most practical and highest benefit for the least cost...in the long run to achieve quality?

Short term reactions to new problems are the worst way to cope on BotE. You won't survive as the AI is doing cost benefit analysis. Always respond, not react. Reactions are poor coping mechanisms that impell the player to moronic war, not heroic honorable war.

I learned about War and I learned the arts of Peace.
I learned about Peace and I learned the arts of War.
Peace is actually a manner of nonviolent conflict resolution in which the former opponent succumbs to your will. It's harder as it seems pointless, but it saves money and lives, and lives are priceless and cannot be replaced. In BotE that is billions of civilan lives and your valued soldiers.

Fight the important battles, not all the conflicts, as that just leads to attrition and is meaningless.

Re: Your first time playing the game

I'm past turn# 400 playing a sandbox game on a 40x40 galaxy at 100% stars (realistically it's like 85%) with no anomalous entities, 1% stellar anomalies, no random events, and 95% minor races.

I only created 3 Aleph class frigate ships and they lack armament but have far better hulls than standard scouts. Despite that, I have conquered 1/5 of the map and explored 1/4 of the map. Two minor races were ultimately hostile, with one declaring war, but even they are amenable and coming around to the idea of trade. None that stay angry can actually wage a war. Sometimes those with fleets are perhaps feeling zero threat and end up becoming very good allies.

I have attacked no one. When it comes time to raise powerful fleets, I will be excited to do so. I have absorbed one powerful minor race's fleet, and two to three more seem likely. Some are so hostile that while I can now slip past their defenses and enter and leave their systems (as the Aleph has a higher movement rate), if I dawdled in their system, they would crush me like an egg. Like the Brane.

I have conquered far more than I ever could had I built combat vessels by being a pleasant major race, which is amusing as I'm playing as the Omega Alliance. I have done this before as the Terrans and as the Khaoran too.

I can certainly make very strong heavy cruisers but that would just increase my upkeep.

It seems more expensive to play the diplomatic game, but it's a miniscule amount versus the cost of invasions. Plus I reckon that would make my first contacts with minor races to be far worse as the Omega Alliance are penalized diplomatically versus the Terrans who are embraced open arms.

The more benevolently you play, apparently if you kindly raise proper infrastructure to support both your colonies and minor race home systems who became members, then THRICE a few turns after meeting new minor races, they on their own petitioned to be members!

It's quite enjoyable and diverting versus a smash-em-up approach.

It takes a lot of time terraforming systems with no M class planets but plenty of P, K, O planets and it works. Your colonists may grow at a slower rate. We don't know if the conjunction of certain other class planets fosters hostile conditions from their proximity, or if certain stars produce bands of radiation that interferes with the growth rate. You could make a whole technbabble science about how life thrives based upon the planetary distance from stars and the effect on climate.

Climate change due to human beings is laughable pseudoscience as genuinely the sun has a monumental effect on climate by comparison coupled with volcanic emissions.
